Phoenix Scorch The Burn!

Riding the wave of a big win over the New Jersey Titans in the season opener, the Philadelphia Phoenix traveled to Baltimore to take on the always tough Baltimore Burn. Previous contests with the Burn have been hard fought, very physical, and low scoring battles. With a torching of the Burn 50-8, it seems clear that THIS Phoenix team seems determined to write their OWN history. In a game rife with relentless rushing and bone jarring hits, the Offense AND the Defense combined to leave an indelible mark on the Baltimore Burn.

Led by QB Jill Ottinger (8 rushes, 66 yds, 2 TD and 4/10 passing, 1 TD) and RB Chrystal Dean-Campbell (7 rushes, 73 yds, 2 TD), the Phoenix running game delivered one devastating drive after the next. RB Kate Sullivan (3 rushes, 56 yds, 1 TD) contributed a touchdown of her own and once again, RB Beth Speakman (8 rushes, 97 yds, 1 TD and 3 rec, 39 yds, 1 TD), found the end zone on the ground and through the air. Kicker/LB Cynthia Corisdeo rounded out the scoring with a 33 yard field goal that probably would have split the uprights from 45yards out!

Defensively, the Phoenix swarmed to the ball and delivered one crushing hit after the other. Led by LB Megan Gerber (3 tackles, 5 assists, 3 forced fumbles, 3 sacks) and Corisdeo (2 tackles, 7 assists, fumble recovery), the defense pressured the Burn QB all game long. SS Malinda Fife (6 tackles, 2 assists), DB April Larry (4 tackles, 3 assists) and LB Carol Grubb (2 tackles, 5 assists) all added huge hits of their own as they kept the Burn in their own territory for the bulk of the contest. The defenses lone miscue came in the 2nd quarter as a little offensive misdirection led to an untouched 65 yard touchdown scamper by the Burn running back. The defense would have no more of that as they completely shut down the Burn offense in the second half.

Next weekend, the 2-0 Phoenix trek up to Portland, Maine to take on the 0-2 Maine Freeze. Be sure to mark your calendars as the Phoenix return home on Saturday, May 17 to square off against longtime rival, Connecticut Crush, at George Washington High School. Kickoff is 2:00 pm.
